lyrics

This song is from the great American songwriter, Pierce Pettis. I first came across him performing at a folk club in Calgary. On a couple of his subsequent trips to Canada, I was able to open for his concerts and hang out with him. This version of ‘God Believes In You’ was arranged and sung by me - Andrew Smith. The song is from his album ‘Everything Matters’. He has released numerous albums and regularly tours in the folk music scene. Check out his music at: www.piercepettis.com

I thought this song would be a good pairing with Dave Warne’s ‘Leave it Alone’ because of the completely different perspectives of the two songs; two sides of the same coin if you will. The song recognizes that people sometimes lose their faith and hope – and it brings to bear upon this condition some comforting spiritual truths distilled over millennia. The lyric turns our struggles with faith on its head with this wry opening lyric: “When you start to doubt if you exist, God believes in you”. Kinda funny - and it gets our attention.

But this lovely lyric moves well beyond flippant, and the writer clearly identifies with the very human struggles he describes: “ When you rise up just to fall again, deserted by your closest friend ... when you’re so ashamed that you could die, when you can’t do good even though you try – God believes in you.” It’s like the preacher used to say: Your faith is not dependant on how hard you can hang on to God, but on his ability to hang on to you.

The lyric wraps up with the powerful words from Jesus’ sermon on the mount: “blessed are the ones who grieve, the ones who mourn, the ones who weep. In sorrow you sow, but in joy you’ll reap. God believes in you.”

When you start to doubt that you exist
God believes in you
Confounded by the evidence
God believes in you

When your light grows so dim
And your chances seem so slim
And you swear you don’t believe in him
God believes in you

When you rise up just to fall again
God believes in you
Deserted by your closest friend
God believes in you

When you’re betrayed by a kiss
You turn your cheek to another fist
It does not have to end like this
God believes in you

Oh, everything matters
if anything matters at all
Everything matters
no matter how big, no matter how small
God believes in you

When you’re so ashamed that you could die
God believes in you
When you can’t do good even though you try
God believes in you

Blessed are the ones that grieve
The ones who mourn, the ones who weep
In sorrow you’ll sow but in joy you’ll reap
God believes in you
