lyrics

There is a podcast I enjoy called ‘Homilies’ by Father Richard Rohr. What initially drew me to him was the name of the ministry he runs in New Mexico; it is called ‘The Center for Action and Contemplation’. (CAC.org) And when I heard that name I breathed a sigh of relief. I think of myself as both an activist and a contemplative - though I don’t do either very well. I have often thought these inclinations were pulling me in opposite directions. But, as Father Richard Rohr points out, they belong together, and truly complement each other.

The key phrase and idea comes from the bible’s most famous poem – Psalm 23. The song No Evil Will I Fear attempts to hold action and contemplation in balance. As an activist, I want to expose the dark mischief of greedy corporations. But as a contemplative, I don’t want to lie awake at night fretting about it. Rather I want to rest in faith. I want to contemplate the love of the Maker and consider how this love is inspiring many good people to work hard for social and environmental justice. ‘Our nightmares and our dreams are here, but no evil will I fear’. I feel like this month’s two songs complement each other and ponder some of the same issues from different perspectives.

Politicians keep us terrorized with campaigns for re-election
The daily news will keep us paralyzed demanding more protection
They’re developing new weapons that hunt you while you’re sleeping
And some new street drug for your children to rip them from your keeping

Free from fear is free indeed and only this is clear
Though we walk through valleys deep
No evil will I fear

New diseases can find you still, behind your gated fortress
Thugs in business suits will steal and kill, they’re brutal and remorseless

Free from fear is free indeed and only this is clear
Though we walk through valleys deep
No evil will I fear

How we behave when the tree is green, imagine when there are none
When the planet groans and shakes and screams against us for all that we’ve done

Stand your ground and dry your tears for freedom drowns in fear
Our nightmares and our dreams are here, no evil will I fear
