Send Some Mercy
Many years ago when our family was very young, our seven year old son was hospitalized with a life-threatening form of cancer.  At the time, I was working as the music and arts pastor at a church. The songs I wrote during that year of living in and out of children's hospital were recorded on an album called Through My Emotions, including this song, Send Some Mercy.  Though some of the songs were dark or sad or angry, it turned out to be my most popular record - and to this day people still tell me how meaningful it is to them.  Hearing it now after all this time, the imagery of the lyric still conjures up the anguish we experienced in those days.  But like most laments, the song also demonstrates a level of hope and trust that God would be there to - at least - hear our complaint and walk with us through the darkness.  As it turned out, our son survived and recovered and hasn't looked back.  We wish everyone's story had the same happy ending as ours.

Send Some Mercy
words and music by Andrew Smith
(c) 1995 Andrew Smith

Here I lie waiting, your nightingale is calling
My eyes are fainting, just like an eagle falling
My heart is hiding, feeling too raw for too long

Change in the weather, the leaves will shake and whisper
But in December, the silence of the winter
Losing my starlight, or am I just losing my mind?

I’m looking for a feeling, hoping for a touch of mercy
I’m waiting for the healing, but all I feel is the hurting
That greets me in the morning time and kisses me goodnight
Oh Lord send some mercy my way, send some mercy

No more illusions, of shiny happy faces
Distorted visions, mirrors and barren places
Madness and pleasure is where I can find some relief

The cup of trembling, the wine of celebration
That never ending, chorus of lamentation
Now tell me father, you’re saving the best for last

I’m looking for a feeling, hoping for a touch of mercy
I’m waiting for the healing, but all I feel is the hurting
That greets me in the morning time and kisses me goodnight
Oh Lord send some mercy my way, send some mercy
She told me to let my light shine in the darkness
She told me to stand fast and lift up my song
And to treasure these moments ‘cause life is so short
Well sometimes, sometimes it feels much too long
Send some mercy my way, send some mercy
