lyrics

Where are you is a lovely folk ballad written by John Janzen. John is a songwriter, musician, storyteller, playwright and teacher from Winnipeg Manitoba. He is one who does not shrink from the hard questions and who seems to have a love-hate relationship with the church. His play called Blink’s Garden is being performed around the country at Fringe Festivals and his ep entitled ‘Roads’ (produced by JP Laurendeau) is available on line and on his website. He currently records and tours as The Janzen Boys with his sons Simon and Mick. Check out their music at: thejanzenboys.com

The song commentary below was written by John Janzen.

At one time I suppose I would have thought that by the time I hit forty, things would be pretty much figured out. It didn’t turn out that way. Is life a dance? Is it a journey? A little bit of both? At one time I suppose I had things figured out. There were the lost and the saved. And which one you became depended on whether you knew the right steps, or set out toward the proper destination. But now my shoe-leather is gone, and the scenery is all wrong.

Now I am not so certain. Or rather the only thing I am certain of is the next step I have to take, and honestly, even that might be a bit of stretch.

Where are you in regards to me
A random dance or journey
I once was blind but now I see
Not more than this step I'm taking

Standing on the outside your face pressed up against the glass
Can't begin afraid of jumping into what's moving way to fast
Learn to love the thing that's given now and not hold the thing that's passed
It's the only way to learn the dance

Where are you in regards to me
A random dance or journey
I once was blind but now I see
Not more than this step I'm taking

Whether wishes dreams or star gazing, the messages you can't decode
Where evidence and knowledge fails, the step of faith the surest road
Find a rhyme and let it guide you to a place you cannot know
It's the only way to reach the goal

Where are you in regards to me
A random dance or journey
I once was blind but now I see
Not more than this step I'm taking
